OpenAI Expands Free Access to ChatGPT's Search Feature

OpenAI has announced that its ChatGPT search engine, introduced in late October, is now available for free to all users. This move is seen as a direct effort to ramp up competition with Google amid increasing antitrust scrutiny.
Kevin Weil, OpenAI's Product Director, expressed enthusiasm about the expanded access. "We initially rolled it out to paid users around two months ago. Now, I can’t imagine ChatGPT without the search functionality—I use it all the time. I’m thrilled to offer it for free to everyone starting today," Weil said, as reported by Seeking Alpha.
Enhanced Features and Accessibility
Weil also noted that the search engine has undergone significant improvements since its launch, with updates incorporating user feedback. “We’ve made it possible to use advanced voice search while in ChatGPT and are now offering the search feature to all logged-in users for free,” he added. The tool is now globally accessible across all platforms.
Initially, the search feature was restricted to ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, as well as users on the SearchGPT waitlist. During its launch, OpenAI highlighted the tool’s capabilities: “ChatGPT can now browse the web more effectively, delivering timely and relevant answers with links to credible web sources. This eliminates the need to switch to a traditional search engine for real-time updates like sports scores, news, stock prices, and more.”
How the ChatGPT Search Engine Works
The ChatGPT search tool combines the power of a natural language interface with real-time web access. It relies on third-party search providers and content from OpenAI’s partners to generate accurate and up-to-date results for users.
This innovation positions ChatGPT as a versatile assistant, seamlessly integrating conversational AI with the utility of a modern search engine. By offering this feature for free, OpenAI aims to enhance accessibility and challenge established search platforms like Google, setting the stage for increased competition in the tech industry.
